The Cheapest Upgrade: Change Your Bulbs
The single most impactful thing you can do costs less than a few pounds — swap your bulbs. If you are using cool white bulbs (4000K or higher), switching to warm white (2700K) instantly makes a room feel cosier and more inviting. LED bulbs in warm white are affordable, energy-efficient, and last for years.
If your fittings accept it, choose bulbs with a slightly lower lumen count (400–600 lumens) for ambient use. Bright is not always better when the goal is atmosphere.
Add a Dimmer Switch
A dimmer switch typically costs under £15 and can be fitted by a competent DIYer in under 30 minutes. It transforms a single ceiling light from a harsh overhead glare into a flexible ambient source. Being able to dim the main light to 30–40% in the evening changes the entire feel of a room.
Make sure your bulbs are dimmable — most LED bulbs now are, but always check the packaging before buying.
Use Multiple Light Sources
